Psychotherapy/Creative Arts Counseling/Yoga

Creative Counseling & Psychotherapy

Anxious? Stressed?  Don’t know where to turn or what to do next?

Welcome. I provide psychotherapy, creative arts therapy, sandplay therapy, yoga and group therapy to individuals and children.

I bring to my practice years of combined experience as a psychotherapist, drama therapist and yoga instructor. I provide a non-judgmental warm, playful space where people of all ages can fully express themselves. I use various approaches in my work including Psychodynamic, in which we explore early experiences and feelings that define present behavior, Jungian, where we discover connections with images that emerge spontaneously to explore new realms of possibility, Family Systems, an exploration of family roles and how these continue into our current relationships, Psychodrama, where we act out personal dramas which may lead to emotional release, and Cognitive Behavioral, where we identify negative and self- defeating thoughts and replace with more positive and self-affirming thoughts.

Creativity incorporates all aspects of our lives, including our mind-body connection, healthy creative expression, and management of outside stressors.  Creativity is a common coping mechanism and an innovative way to express oneself. Creative arts counseling is effective because creating art can help awaken thoughts and feelings that have been buried or inaccessible. The creative arts utilizes expressive art materials, music, movement, and role play. When words are not available for expression or communication of difficult feelings, the arts can speak instead.  Acknowledging and recognizing emotions is the first step in beginning to deal with them and once the emotions are acknowledged, they can be expressed. Some emotions are difficult to convey with words or conversations in therapy and are more easily expressed through art. The focus is on the process of creation, not the finished product. Creative arts counseling is a way to communicate difficult thoughts, experiences, and feelings through different artistic modalities. Both the art itself and the process of creating art can provide a non-verbal avenue to communicate, problem solve, express self and emotions, and positively cope with difficult experiences and life challenges.

Sandplay therapy is beneficial for both adults and children. It can be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, and encourages the process of self-discovery and healing

Jungian-based sandplay therapy uses trays filled with sand and a variety of miniatures that can be placed in the trays to create a three-dimensional scene or image. Through allowing this simple act of imagination and creation, the trays provide a means of expressing and processing experiences and feelings that bypass the thinking, analytical brain and access the unconscious. This can bring to light what is not otherwise visible.
